2026 Recommended Shipping Tier StructureUpdated 3 days ago

In the past few years, carriers have implemented multiple price increases across all service levels, making shipping more expensive than it has ever been.

If your checkout price is the same as it was in 2024, you’re not only covering more of the shipping cost than originally planned, you’re likely actively losing money and eating into your overall profit margin.

The recommendations below reflect current industry benchmarks and partner data for 2026. They are designed to balance customer expectations, transit times, and shipping cost control.

Recommended Free Shipping Thresholds

Historically, many brands set free shipping thresholds at roughly 15–25% of Average Order Value (AOV), but thanks to the rise in shipping costs, industry leaders have begun advising setting thresholds between 25–40% of AOV.

Based on current carrier pricing and industry practices, we recommend using the following shipping tiers as a starting framework and adjusting the pricing based on your typical package size, weight, and product characteristics.

A case for multiple shipping options: Offering multiple tiers allows customers to choose the balance of price and delivery speed that works best for them, ensuring you’re not broadly overpaying for a service tier. By providing options, you’re also gaining valuable zero-party data into what your customers care about that can be used to improve customer incentives and sale strategies in the future.

Free Shipping (Economy)

Customer Price: Free
Carrier:
UniUni
Estimated Transit Time: 2-10 days nationwide

This option allows brands to offer free shipping (with or without a threshold) while keeping costs manageable. Slower transit times should be clearly communicated at checkout so customers understand the tradeoff.

Standard Shipping

Customer Price: $7–$8 for packages under 5 lbs
Recommended Carrier: USPS Ground Advantage
Estimated Transit Time: 2-6 days nationwide

3‑Day Shipping (Expedited)

Customer Price: $15–$20 (for packages under 15 lbs)
Recommended Carriers: UPS 3‑Day, FedEx 3‑Day, USPS Priority Mail, or FedEx One Rate (when applicable)
Estimated Transit Time: 1-3 days nationwide

Next Day Shipping

Customer Price: ~$45 (for packages under 20 lbs)
Recommended Carrier
We recommend using UPS Next Day Air Saver instead of regular Next Day AirSaver provides the same next-day delivery guarantee but extends the delivery window from 12 PM to 3 PM, often resulting in ~15% lower label costs.
Estimated Transit Time: Next business day.

Next-day shipping is best positioned as a premium option for urgent deliveries. Pricing should reflect the higher carrier cost associated with overnight services.

Testing and Adjusting Your Model

Shipping strategies should be reviewed periodically as costs and customer expectations change.

If your checkout pricing has not been updated recently, consider testing revised shipping tiers for a short period (for example, 30 days) and reviewing the impact on:

  • Conversion rate
  • Shipping cost recovery
  • Average order value

In our experience, brands that raised their standard shipping costs $1-$4 have not seen a correlated dip in conversion rates. We’ve also seen great success from brands that increased their AOV benchmark to 30-40% last year.

Your Account Manager can also help review your current shipping setup and provide recommendations based on your product mix, packaging profile, and order patterns.
